An Army Service Forces patch,
which Russell had in his
possession. It may have been
my Grandfather's.

495th Fighter Training Group

These photographs were taken in the period from April to mid June 1944 when Russell was with the 495th Fighter Training Group, based at Atcham Airfield in Shropshire, England. The 495th was officially an 8th Air Force unit, but was charged with giving advanced training, specific to the European Theater of operations, to pilots of both the 8th and 9th Air Force. Following this training the men would be assigned to their permanent unit. Most P-47 pilots ended up in the 9th Air Force. In mid May of 1944, Russell and thirteen other graduates of Harding Field class 44A were assigned to the 358th Fighter Group, their permanent unit.
